Body Language Basics

Assignment

(1) Place a small treat on the floor where your puppy can see. Practice facing him and stepping in his way until he stops trying to reach the treat. As soon as he "gives up," turn your body to the side and say "Okay!" to invite him to get the treat.

Repeat 5 times, then take a break and try again later.

Keep working on this behavior until your puppy no longer tries to grab the treat when you are facing him, and eagerly goes to the treat when you turn to the side and say "Okay!"

(2) Practice turning away and, using brisk steps and patting your leg, encourage your puppy to follow you.

Note: do not use his name! This is an exercise in body language, so we will try to avoid using verbal instructions.

As soon as your puppy reaches your side, give them a small treat.

Repeat 5 times, then take a break and try again later.

Keep working on this behavior until your puppy trots briskly and eagerly after you when you turn and move away.
